The Typing Test serves as both a gesture of recognition and a critique: a reminder of the structural biases women endured, and of the creativity, intelligence, and strength that persisted despite them. Throughout much of the twentieth century, women seeking employment in offices were routinely required to pass typing tests, reinforcing the assumption that their place was behind a typewriter rather than in positions of leadership, authorship, or influence.

In this piece, a woman sits at a desk in a highly charged, almost cinematic environment. The bold fields of blue, red, and yellow create a landscape that feels both abstract and atmospheric, as though the room itself is shaped by pressure and expectation. Her posture is poised but tense, her hands hovering over the keys, hesitant to begin. The surrounding darkness presses inward, suggesting the limits imposed on her ambitions, while the vivid colors behind her hint at the potential and capability held out of reach.

The work uses expressive mark-making and saturated color to underscore the emotional complexity of this moment—humiliation, determination, resilience, and the quiet dignity of someone performing a task far below her real capacity. Like much of my practice, the piece engages themes of memory, layered experience, and the stories that remain embedded in cultural practices long after they’ve faded from view.

Our Museum Quality Fine Art Prints

Printed at 2400 x 1200 dpi with archival 12-color pigment inks on acid and lignin-free mold-made copperplate paper, these prints offer exceptional longevity (200+ years) and tonal fidelity. Unlike dye-based prints, the pigment ink rests on the textured paper surface, producing a visual depth and tactile quality comparable to traditional etchings or lithographs.

Each limited edition print includes a certificate of authenticity printed on premium, watermarked paper with fluorescent security fibers. The certificate is attached to a serialized, tamper-proof hologram that matches an identical hologram permanently affixed to the reverse side of the artwork and corresponds to an edition log on a third-party artwork registry.

Please Note: Screen colors often appear more vivid than printed images because digital displays actively emit light, while prints rely on reflected light, resulting in softer, natural tones.
